Day 84... Whole foods vs. Raw foods.

I like lentils. But you have to cook lentils to enjoy them, which is why I am concerned about the raw foods diet. I will include 'mostly' raw foods, but getting protein is a real challenge for me, and I want to do it naturally. As it says in Wikipedia: With 26% protein, lentils have the highest level of protein in any plant after soybeans and hemp, and because of this it is a very important part of the diet in many parts of the world, especially in India, which has a large vegetarian population.

Saturday I will attend a Raw Food Meet up in the Richmond area (not that I am giving away my location).

I have a lot to learn, but I will ask many questions.

Ciao!

Or 'chow' perhaps, if you are hungry.

Way to go! I found your blog through the Vegan Lunchbox and I think you are doing awesome! I have been vegetarian since last year and have been Vegan now for a few months. I can honestly say I have never felt better in my life. The hardest thing for me is getting enough protein, but the healthier I get the easier it seems. Tofu, Nuts, beans, and vegan "meat" helps, but I haven't gotten on the lentil kick yet. I will have to, though, I suppose. I will say that I get tired a bit, especially when I work out hard - so I started taking a glutamine supplement (from GNC -raspberry flavored) and it really helps! I thing it is a synthetic amino acid (made in a lab) not an animal product - I'm not too stoked on it being synthetic, but I figure I do so well to keep most crap out of my diet now, it should all even out! When I take it my muscles don't feel sore and it really wakes me up.

Anyways, keep up the good work!

Hi Joe! Good to hear you are still at it. As a student of holistic nutrition at the moment, I wouldn't try to necessarily eat everything raw. Some things are better absorbed cooked and it's also...er...rather restrictive, especially heading into winter. We learn in my nutrition course that it's good to focus on food native to where you live and foods in season, as these are the foods you are meant to eat in your climate. Summer is for cooling foods, like salads, and winter is better for heartier warming foods, like stews. I say aim for thirty or forty percent raw foods and the rest healthy vegan shit, watch your caloric intake, and please don't be too restrictive. Too few calories will slow your weightloss down.
Just my two cents. But you know what they say, opinions are like assholes-everybody has one...:0)

You can eat lentils raw... sprouted! I agree with Tracy, though. 100% raw may not be the best route.
